This week’s video is of the protest against the FARC. For more information about the massive protest, check out Juliana’s post on Global Voices and Sibylla Brodzinsky’s article in the Christian Science Monitor.
Despite what it says at the end of the video, the music is not War on War by Wilco, but rather “No creo [...]

I just got back from Centro Comercial Monterrey where I had to pick up a DV Firewire cable in order to transfer some digital video from casette to hard drive. At the store I noticed they were selling iPhones so, out of curiosity, I asked the price.
“1,800,000 pesos.”
That’s about $900.
And so I said that I [...]

All this blah-blah-blah about citizen media and the democratization of participatory communication … all the traveling and the workshops and the guides and conference panels … the true end-goal of it all … the dream … the mecca … was to get mentioned in a rap song.
And now that it’s happened, I’m trying to figure [...]

Below is this week’s newsletter to the Rising Voices mailing list. I’m so happy with the progress that Rising Voices has made, however, that I want to share it here as well. I’ll be publishing photos from last night’s event soon.
I write today’s newsletter after what has been, without any doubt, the most satisfying week [...]

The new bloggers of Rising Voices outreach projects in Colombia, Bolivia, and Bangladesh are more than just up-and-coming citizen journalists. They have also discovered the power of prose to reveal glimpses of the human emotions that bring us together and the local differences that make each of our communities unique.

One of the main reasons I’m down here in Medellin, Colombia is to shoot a short documentary about the work being done by HiperBarrio, one of the five current outreach projects of Rising Voices. Video editing is a new thing for me and I’ve come to learn that the most time-consuming aspect of it is [...]

I finished my book, Finding Flow. In a way, I feel like I read it too fast and left behind too many dog-eared pages that need revisiting. But I was ready to move onto something else so I scanned the bookshelf and decided to dig back into The Heart that Bleeds: Latin America Now by [...]

I know, I know … bad bad blogger.
I just haven’t been feelin’ it. Or at least, I hadn’t been feeling it … until I had an incredibly inspiring conversation with Héctor Aristizábal a couple days ago. From Pasadena Weekly:
In 1982, soldiers took him and his brother, Juan Fernando, from their home in a war-torn Colombian [...]
