I am not necessarily a fan of American Idol, but I happen to agree with Stephen Thompson when he opines “I love the fact that I’m watching it at the same time as tens of millions of other people, and that we're all taking sides, forming rooting interests…”

It speaks to your point that A.I. is “the one scrap left of shared national culture.” Love it or hate it, we are all experiencing it simultaneously, which is rare these days. I would also add that it is unique in how it appeals to so many diverse demographics. In our “fractured” society, anything that can be enjoyed equally by men/women/children of all ages merits a unique distinction in our culture.

"[...]but I was really hoping to leave the Middle East without new friends[...]"

Haha..you cannot do that. It's not an option in the middle east to be without friends.

"Amazing music or crappy TV … common culture forms around shared media."

Interesting. I've been into many discussions recently with friends from my generation who spent their childhood under the monologous channels of Arab regimes, and witnessed the transition to the openness we know today as we grew up, and how that has affected our collective consciousness.

It was a pleasure meeting you David.
