David, here's to this significant pause.

Having deliberately set out not to travel since July (only eight trips!), I've rediscovered daytripping. When I have travelled (once to Linz for this incredible symposium a brill friend of mine curated), I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

My wish for you in 2010: that the angels in your new city will quiet the demons of relentless nomadic impulse and let you enjoy this gift of a few months off the road. We have treasure maps of falling fruit, echoing boardwalks, and stubborn sunshine to seek out---

Beautiful post!

It wasn't until I started living abroad that I was able to really see the beauty of my home country. When I return to Canada for a few weeks, I typically see more and experience more of the country than friends and family do in a year.

Travel is everything, however if you don't open your eyes you will see nothing.

I called my grandmother while on a train to Ann-Arbor on my month jet blue trip and she said something to the effect of what Joel said to you but more of a warning: Traveling can be an addiction, so if you want a career and a family then stop before it is too late.

Coming back to San Diego makes me usually happy even though a month later I want to go to some place I haven't been to yet but going on hikes and exploring new places or old places with new people makes me remember another quote that I was surprised you did not include:

" I have traveled much in Concord."
-Thoreau

Here's a line to add to your commonplace book: "Patria quis exul se quoque fugit?" What exile from his own country can escape himself?

I spent far too long this morning trying to find this in Ovid until a classicist friend suggested I really wanted Horace.

i once bought a t-shirt from the tourist trap at Walden Pond that said: 'Thoreau Sauntering Society: 'Tis a great art to saunter.' I've lately about that other narcotic: anticipation. Inevitably, the notion that one has a trip on the horizon pulls you away from where you are. Walking quickly in Brooklyn, thinking too much about my trip to Seattle, I miss great stuff like the grin of the peculiar 80 year old lady selling hot dogs on my corner.
