I haven’t been able to shake off this post throughout the weekend. It may be, as BooksForMe states, a misrepresentation of the kindness and generosity of us citizens who “give more to people in crisis in other countries than any other nation on earth”.

However, how many WOULD still give help if tax breaks didn’t come their way for every dollar given out?

It still doesn´t erase the fact that a handful of dollars sent crumpled from a sweaty hand into China doesn’t have the emotional effect of a hug, a pat on the back or a concerned “hey, I’m sorry about the earthquake, I hope your family and friends are safe”.

I’d prefer the personal 2nd option to the impersonal and dollars.

You are comparing apples and oranges, a media outlet with human beings. That is not only a mis-characterization of the American people, but illogical and unsupported by history and statistics. The American people happen to give more to people in crisis in other countries than any other nation on earth. Our empathy and compassion for the victims of the Chinese earthquake should not be measured by an American news broadcast. It does not speak for us. We speak for ourselves.
