Me gustan el concepto de “sequilingüismo” y la recomendación de de Ugarte: “Sell in other people’s language, work in your own language alongside the languages of your colleagues, live in diversity”. Se dice que el multilingüismo es la condición normal en el mayor parte del mundo; aún antes del globalismo muy pocos países eran monoculturas lingüísticas, y el concepto de monolingüismo es una ilusión nacionalista y colonial. Al mínimo se habla el “dialecto” de la provincia y se entiende la “lengua” standard de la capital; y un niño de una ciudad cosmopólita crece entendiendo los cuatro o cinco idiomas de sus vecindarios sin pensarlo.

Pero… la practicalidad de su recomendación depende de condiciones que no son fáciles de cambiar. El problema es en parte político: en mi país nacionalista y neocolonialista, de un “manifest destiny” anglohablante, pocas personas están preparadas a aprender los idiomas de sus vecinos y colaboradores. Las escuelas practicamente no enseñan idiomas y crecemos en una burbuja de pop culture isolados de nuestras comunidades lingüisticas “minoritarias”. Además hay una limitación práctica: ¿cómo debemos aprender a entender los cientos de idiomas que nos ha traído el globalismo? Unfortunately, past a certain point sequilingüismo doesn’t scale.

But I tried to do the same with my writer’s blog and I was a REALLY HARD. I can barely translate some of my fiction post, but take a lot of time. When I write in English, I do thinking in American people and I do not translate to Spanish. Besides, there are journalistic articles that are too much attached to the Hispanic reality. It’s a nonsense to translate it.

Also, I am journalist and I am afraid to do a misspelling or something worst with the English Language. This fear, specially, inhibited me to write in English.

The translation side would definitely require more time investment than the writing side.

But just like the article mentions that the five Argentine bloggers started their blogs as experiments, finding out just how bi-lingual I can make this site will be my own little experiment. If it becomes too time consuming, I’ll just stick with the basics.

Writing for self-translation can also be inhibiting in terms of content and style. When I’ve tried it, I’ve found myself constraining my idioms, jokes and topics to the narrow domain of what I know how to translate. Sometimes I’ve gotten so tangled up I’ve had to write the text in my weaker language and translate it back to English.

One option might be an abstract or brief excerpt in English of your Spanish-language posts, and vice versa.
