I wonder what the effect on the final cost of that bag of Peet’s would be if they tacked on another $0.25 per kilo which would prolly make much more a marked difference on their end. And while I’m at it, I also wonder what the price breakdown is for Kenyan coffee. I’m a big fan of the stuff. Not a big fan of the price.

Good question. I wanted to fit that clip in, but I was trying my hardest to keep this movie under 5 minutes (which I failed at.). There is a state-owned company which buys all coffee in Colombia. And they set the prices for “domestic”, “select”, and “organic.” I have no idea how they deal with so-called “free trade” coffee, but I think it would make a fascinating investigation. He told me that coffee for export goes for about 3,500 pesos a kilo ($1.75) and domestic coffee goes for about $1,500 ($.75). So when we buy a bag of Peet’s coffee (1 pound) for $10, we’re paying about 20 times the price that your average coffee cultivator gets for doing all of the work shown in this video.

Great video – it was enlightening to see the evolution of coffee before it gets to me. I didn’t catch all of the Spanish…. is that how small producers do their coffee, or are they selling to larger companies after processing?
