From an e-mail I got from an American who went to Medellin for a 1 month vacation 15 years ago....he wrote this when I asked if he missed the US as much as I miss Medellin living in the US. I just got back yesterday from the FLOWER FESIVAL in Medellin, and I am more amazed than ever by the positive change in every aspect of the city.

Hello,
Medellin is exploding!!!! Business is booming, so many new social programs for the people, Metrocable, Metrobus, new shopping malls, new buildings all over the city, new parks, remodeling of the Jardin Botanica, expanding Las Palmas, new tunnel to Santa Fe,improved highways to the coast, new Convention Center, new clinics, crime rate lowest in 30 years, kidnapping down to 285 (antes 2,600),etc,etc,..................miss the U.S.? Hell, no!

I grew up with this being somewhat common knowledge... it is weird that even though my perspective on life has changed so much, this does not shock me.

Surprised with your Latam experience you're only encountering Ms. Guillermoprieto now. I actually think her shorter pieces are better than Samba; she seems better at sustaining magazine-length (albeit NYer-length) rather than book-length narrative. That said, couldn't quite get through her latest collection for some reason.
