I do think you're on to something with the academic attitude. It can be like rich racquetball-playing suits. They drive sports cars because they have more and like to show it off. Academics might know longer words than the average Joe, but it can also come across as a mine-is-bigger-than-yours fest. You also don't give them much wiggle-room in your critique. They're either too highfalutin or too low-brow ;) I agree that simple communication is more effective at getting your message across.
