Sigh.
That’s how I start out my work day. Then a slight wince. And then I open up my to-do list.
It’s a long, long … long list. It’s what I should be doing right now, not this. But then, this blog is starting to feel more like a repository of stuff from elsewhere than the actual space of communication and thoughts and feelings that it once was.
It’s Friday morning. I’m still trying to wake up with the help of my friend Peet. Today’s roast: “Major Dickinson’s“, delicious.
Today is also the conference of the International Communication Association and, seeing that I like communicating internationally, I figure I should drop by. There are so many good sessions/panels, I won’t know what to choose. I might catch the end of “global news in local context”, will check out “what’s so significant about social networking”, then “the public sphere”, “digital equality”, and “high density: online forums, conversations and blogs.”
Tomorrow’s panels look equally interesting. Not sure how many conference attendees will be sticking around until 6:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening, but if you’re one of them, come check us out at “Grassroots Discussion Panel: Participatory Models and Alternative Content Production.”
After our panel we’ll be heading over to the Prelinger Archive (Harper’s Article) for some sort of reception. Now there’s a place with some freaky-ass films. (note the importance of that hyphen) Check out Afro Mood Burlesque.
Monday (happy Memorial Day) I’m headed down to San Jose for the start of Netsquared. It’s a very cool and new way of organizing a do-gooding geek conference and I’m hoping to write a pre-post on it over the weekend and will be writing more from the actual conference.
Oh, and did I tell you I’ve got a new job? The reins of Latin America Regional Editor at Global Voices have been passed on to someone much more deserving, Eddie. Now I’m “Director of Outreach” - hence the last post. I’m ecstatic about it. In fact, I was thinking to myself, is there anything work-wise that I’d rather be doing right now? My conclusion: nóp. But I’m willing to entertain suggestions.
Anyway, I miss y’all. I think it’s great that Cindy, who was horrified by my large collection of Sean Paul on iTunes, checked out Maneja Beto at Temple Bar. It feels like only yesterday that I was getting introduced to Maneja Beto via Daily Texican and El Mas Chingon. (My June resolution is to get DT, EMC, and Mari all blogging again … hey, I’m outreach director, it’s what I’m paid to do …) Nathan’s new layout is almost giving me the inspiration to clean things up around here. I might have to get him drunk this weekend and learn all his tricks. I’m wondering why the groom-to-be sees revolution under the surface and I’m amazed that just a week after grading finals, Xolo is already back teaching.
I’m also very sympathetic to Paul’s unknowing submersion/submission into the madness of web 2.0. It was enough when there were too many blog posts to read. Now I’m also trying to catch up on the latest last.fm listens of my friends, their tweets, their professional bullshitting on LinkedIn, and their photographs on Flickr. Speaking of which, in a very short amount of time, Nathan, Jennifer, cad (I hate the lower-case, homes), and Georgia have all somehow become better than most professional photographers.
Congrats to Abogado for … actually becoming an abogado. Congrats to Moreno for his soon-to-be Señora Morena. And congrats to Bobbo for graduating from law school and turning a year wiser in the same week.

mmm…I LOVE Peet’s and Major Dickinson’s is the best. Living away from the Bay, I can’t get fresh Peet’s though. I might just have to sign up for the Coffeee of the month club through the mail.
Have a great weekend.

Aww it seems like everything around you is moving on and forward to greater things..as well as yourself. This generation is slowly falling into it’s comfort and meaning in life. Congrats on the new position.
Gotta pay the bills (which in NYC are pretty hefty)…so it’s back to work I go.
I’ve missed your musing, observations, and intellectual provocations too.
But I know you are doing good things, so I will wait until you have more time to share the amazing results of those creative synapses that take place in your head.
See, if I had read this before leaving on Friday, I would have congratulated you on the new position — Congratulations! I even sent an email to the outreach address you listed in your first post that morning… I’m anxious to hear more and follow the project.
I don’t see you being able to turn the hat trick and get Mari, EMC and DT blogging again. What do you need Mari to blog for, she can tell you all the cool stories. At least she’s on flickr. I do miss EMC and DT a lot, but I know they’re both busy working on their careers and shtuff.
okay..will someone PLEASE explain to me that whole, “hat trick” phrase! I’ve heard it SO many times in the last couple of weeks and I just don’t get it. haha..why the hat trick?? WHY?!
Kelly,
Now I know what to bring when/if Mari and I ever make it to Modesto.
Yolanda,
Thanks. Two years ago I would have never dreamed that I woulda found a job I enjoyed so much.
Xolo,
You’re the one who was asking for provocation … I figured my whining about academia would be enough.
JK. Thanks for the encouragement and kind words.
Nathan,
And email response is on its way.
Cindylu,
DT and EMC keep flirting with the blog comeback, but you’re right, I think Mari’s blog2.0 is her flickr account.
Brenda,

Thanks for the clarification, Oso.
Hehe
I’m late to the party - but I’ll offer belated congratulations on a gig you love!
