David,
Two things:
(1) Your generosity is appreciated. Think of it as an investment. Good karma goes a long way. And I have a feeling you will be compensated in one form or another for your good deeds.
(2) I've previously considered your idea on how to make millions. Currently, there is at least one notable company attempting to do exactly what you've mentioned. There are a few problems with the idea though, and I think they're realizing this. We can discuss them later.
(3) Hope your travels and the conference in India are enlightening.

Oso. Buying pirated stuff isn't that cheap down here, or at least where i've asked, it's about $6 for a DVD. Give me the service, and I'll pay.

I'd have thought that in the US, where people can download stuff for free, no one would go with Netflix.. and there it is, growing as a business.

Medea,

You're too kind. I have a tough time believing, though, that many people would pay $30 a month for Netflix when you can buy about 20 movies a month (before they even come out) for the same price at your neighborhood market.

Jennifer,

Agreed. "Luxuries" for me usually involve time more than money.

the problem is that I’m not motivated by money: there is no new car I really want to buy, or expensive neighborhood I’d like to live in, or Mediterranean resort island I’d like to visit. What motivates me are walks around Lake Merritt with Mari and library books; both of which are free.

Amen! I totally agree: the best things in life are usually very simple and free.

I like long posts...

How about just making a netflix type of deal work in our southern countries?

That's millions in the making.
