and this epitaph is the aftermath

No substance to be found in this post, but substance gets so redundant anyway.

My legs are killing me. We musta cycled at least forty miles today. Lots of hills. Lots of sunshine. My freckles are peeling off. Or is it pealing? OS X let’s me use either one. I gotta say y’all, I’m pretty impressed with how people are using technology these days. It’s tough not talking to Sparsh while on a long bike ride, but if I stuff headphones in my ears (shouldn’t it be earphones in my head) then eventually he’ll give up.

Today for example, we’re arguing back and forth for about two hours over whether law school is necessary or not. I tell him the only purpose of law school is that people leave you alone for three years, you get to network, you get a piece of paper, and you put two more initials after your name. Mister I just got an amazing LSAT score though starts getting defensive and saying there are things you can only learn in law school. Bah humbug. I’m not one to make the point since I’ve never been to law school - except for and hour last week - but I stand by my claim that there is absolutely nothing you can learn paying 30 grand a year in law school that you can’t learn for free outside of it.

Wait a minute, where’d I go. My point was that after our 2 hour round-a-bout - once again settled by the agreement that we need to open an affordable Indian restaurant together - I started listening to my podcasts. I got through about 5 of them and really, I’m blown away. Barak Obama’s podcast if pretty badass. He went through step by step explaining why he voted no on the Roberts confirmation. Even though I disagreed - I think Roberts deserved the confirmation - his argument was very well thought out and well articulated. I think it should honestly be a requirement that every single Senator and Representative have a weekly podcast updating their constituency on what they’ve been up to. I wish I remembered all the other goodies I heard (some pretty decent Chinese Punk via the World’s Technology Podcast), but I did really feel like I had the entire world buzzing into my ears.

Myke is in town and staying with HP. We ended up having a fun night last night. You really couldn’t find yourself three more different muskateers, but we got along swimmingly; freckly white boy, gay suthna, and GOP latino. After talking the usual political bullshit at HP’s pad (HP made an unusually bad showing in the judicial philosophy debate) and putting down some Mexican beer, we cruised to a “party” at one of HP’s friends’ places. Actually, but before that, there were some comical moments back at HP’s place. First was when HP said “I’m absolutely an ass man” and Myke started busting up. Second was HP asking Myke if gay guys gave each other roses. It wasn’t the really question that was funny, it was the look on his face, like an 18-year-old guy finding out for the first time that girls fart too. We recorded a little of our conversation which I’ll try to edit into a podcast. The fact that Myke’s voice is a full two octaves deeper than HP’s should break some stereotypes.

Then we cruised to this party where HP and I (I think he introduced himself as “Joe” and I was “Carlos”) convinced the crowd that we were brothers from another mother. Literally. And they bought it.

With all the respect in the world to Cindylu, I think it’s pretty obvious: Myke and HP make the cuter couple. Am I right or am I right? Peas out.

You just had to pick the most uncute photo of HP and I together. I think that might be the first photo I’ve ever seen of HP where he’s not smiling like a 1st grader.

If you and Sparsh open up a place, I’ll definitely visit.

You could say the same thing about medical school - and certainly the same thing about college or any other grad school - but would you want somebody working on you that didn’t have those extra “initials” after their name? Its simply the most efficient way for a society to ensure that people know what they say to know and are who they say they are. One of my professors, while teaching us the archaic rules of property that are a staple of the first year curriculum, would tell us that it’s simply part of the vocabculary and culture of being a lawyer. Law school is the intellectual “boot camp” that creates a sense of pride and community in the law. Is there anything you can’t learn with a Westlaw account, access to a law library and the discipline to read 8 hours a day with no constructive input or direction? Maybe not. Can you get a job without a JD? No.

An affordable Indian place would do well here I think. The only decent, cheap, Indian food I’ve found in SD is Cafe India, in sports arena hell. I’ve heard good things about monsoon, but I haven’t been yet, and its not cheap.

Oh, and Abogado has got it right re school.

LOL @ this post. Sorry for not responding sooner, but I have been VERY busy with school. I might even have to (gasp) bow out of blogging for a while, my time constraints have gotten that tight.

Regarding Cindylu and Me vs. Myke and Me, well, I still prefer Cindylu, afterall, she has much softer skin than Myke, but than again, Myke is much more romantic. *blushing*

And while Myke’s voice may be a bit deeper than mine, don’t let that fool you. I’m like a mini-Mike Tyson, I’ll bite your ears off!!!

Btw, while I don’t have the time to dig deeper, Milton Friedman, in his book Capitalism and Freedom, does delve into certifications and their benefits and costs. If memory serves me correctly, he did argue for non-certified professionals to still be able to practice, and even included the medical profession (non-certified doctors). I can’t remember all of the details of his arguments right now, but I remember they seemed persuasive at the time. If you’re near a library, check it out, it is in his chapter titled “Occupational Licensure”.

Can you get a job without a JD? No.

Te presento a Abraham Lincoln, Gary Blasi, y Barbara Macri Ortiz.

  10. 10abogadoNo Gravatar from United States says:

    Abe: no comment needed.

Blasi: “Professor Blasi became a lawyer without attending law school. After graduate study at Harvard, where he was a Graduate Prize Fellow and Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Professor served as a legal apprentice in a community law office in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he also began his practice. In 1978, he joined the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, where he coordinated complex litigation in the areas of housing, welfare, homelessness, and redevelopment. He jumped through an aweful lot of hoops not to go through one last one. Congrats to him for his many accomplishments. For everyone else: just go to law school.

Ortiz: not sure what that article says, but can’t find anything about law school. Point is 99.999+% of people would not be able to get a job as a practicing lawyer without a JD, and 100% would not be able to be a practicing lawyer at a job that would pay any money. Public interest allows for exceptions because they are desperate for people and don’t pay very much. So, let me be more clear: Can you get a job as a lawyer at a law firm without a JD? No.

i’ve been trying to figure out podcasts. i’m so technically challenged? *sigh* how can i listen to yours or obama’s, can you like link to them. i ended up finding some random ones that were really not very interesting.

  14. 14HispanicPunditNo Gravatar from United States says:

Here are some really good podcasts on economics. One that may be of particular interest to the liberal anti-Wal-Mart readers of this blog, is this one on Wal-Mart, by professor of economics Dr. Russell Roberts.

To download the podcast, right click on the title of the post, and click on “Save Link As”, that should download it to your computer, than you can play it like any other mp3 file.

  15. 15osoNo Gravatar from United States says:

    Irasali,

Before HP pushes more podcasts on you that are “really not very interesting,” here’s the link to Obama’s podcast. You’re lucky that your senator has a podcast that he updates frequently. I should design a form email/petition to get Feinstein and Boxer to do the same. The link to our own podcast is the same as our regular feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/oso. If you enter that into iTunes, it will also automatically download all the songs we put up.

    HP,

I don’t mean to hate man, but up until last week you were still calling a “podcast” an “iPod.” Anyway bro, I’m sure the masses wanna hear your favorite tracks from The Game, so we should record one of these soon.

  16. 16irasaliNo Gravatar from United States says:

thanks for the links guys. as soon as i have internet at my new place i’ll be listening to them. ’specially obami’s, he’s so damn smart and cute. i saw him on michigan ave. once when he was first running and i told my friend, omg, there’s barack obama. he was walking with an entourage but he saw us and smiled and i was simply smitten.

  17. 17HispanicPunditNo Gravatar from United States says:

iPod, Podcast, tomaTOE, tomAtoe, it’s all the same. :-)

  18. 18irasaliNo Gravatar from United States says:

hello, i’m back with more podcast questions. i was able to link and listen to obama’s podcast, but when i tried linking to the one for your blog it took me to a page with feed. you mentioned that i enter the feed in my itunes. did that too but got error messages. any other suggestions?
