Las Mañanitas

Estas son las mañanitas que cantaba el rey David [soy yo]

The board of directors here at El Oso, el Moreno, and El Abogado would like to wish a very happy birthday to our political and judicial correspondent, Abogado. Of course an embarassing photo from the old school is requisite:

Freshman Dance

This one’s from ‘93. Abo and I, if you couldn’t tell, are the two white guys. Why I’m in my own private Idaho with my then-girlfriend, I have no idea. Speaking of which, yesterday was said then-girlfriend’s birthday as well and the board of directors would also like to wish her the very best. She will one day be governing all humanity and probably all organisms in the known universe so you might as well get used to her face.

You may be be asking yourself what the fuck is going on with our hair in this picture (and please, someone say something about Abo’s shirt … he used to wear that thing everywhere). Please do not mistakenly judge that Abo and I weren’t the official return of cool … ’cause we were. This just happens to be a little hairstyle we started in SoCal in the early 90’s which caught on with the grunge scene and Asian gansta’s. We thought it was great that those were the two groups to copy us. So what you do is let your hair grow out on top and then shave the sides and back underneath. Then, if grunge is your thing, you pull it up in a greasy ponytail and wear wife-beaters with unbuttoned flannels while you skate around mall parking lots. If, however, you are of the Asian gansta variety, you shave as high up as your bangs and let the resulting pineapple looking thing fall about your face as you bump Nas and Wu-Tang in your lowered Honda Accord.

Here’s to the next quarter-century my friend (Corona in hand).

Let me be the first to say, “That’s hot.” Why? Oh, because I still sport the same hairstyle… Gotta stay true, something I don’t beleive in, except when it comes to clothes & hair - still pegging my pants, wearing high socks, and stussy/mossimo. Oh, and No Fear/Big Johnson/Red Sand never gets old either.
    Happy Birthday Kev.

See you said something about the hair but I was indeed gonna … had you not beat me to the punch. Oh, never mind. I’ll do so anyway. Is that the California version of a mullett? Shaving the sides and back underneath is very close to being a mullet.

You make me feel all old being that was in the early 90s … I was like graduating from college then.

Hey, Happy Birthday to abogado who, though I don’t know very well as he’s rarely reveals himself, am assured is a really nice guy.

Good god, that is painful. It will take an extra few beers tonight for me to forget that one.

btw, thanks for the Bday wishes all. And Moreno — I’m pretty sure you were right there with us in the fashion department in ‘93. I give props to revazito for claiming it loud and proud. Off to DC United.

    ¡Feliz cumpleaños, Abogado!

Oso, my brother had a similar hairstyle, but it was always slicked back with a lot of gel. Also, you forgot about the Asian gangsters who would bleach the tiny bit of hair that was left. It always looked a little orange.

HAHHAHAHAHAH…That is a great picture!!! I didn’t know you guys knew each other that far back. Damn Kevin, you wore that shirt in public? I bet you were a straight A student, weren’t you? Call it a lucky guess. ;-)

    JK….Happy birthday bro!!

***Note To Self: Make sure Oso and a camera are NEVER around during private events.

    Revaz,

You were obviously a patron of Anchor Blue. The real deal was at the Anaheim flea market.

    Joe,

So great to see you around. Been enjoying the old school drawings on your blog.

    Moreno,

I’ll email you in case she doesn’t want to be associated with a bunch of vagrants.

    Myke,

Abo and I graduated from college in the early 90’s too. Did you never watch Doogie Howser?

    Abo,

Already using me as an excuse to your alcoholism. So characteristic. But since it’s your birthday you get away with it.

    Cindylu,

I love the orange poof. I think I mighta even had one.

    HP,

He wasn’t even a straight student. Or that’s what we all thought anyway. Hiyo!

  13. 13elenamaryNo Gravatar from United States says:

Big props to the A-man! It’s not too far off that we’ll see these days returning again. I can almost hear Arrested Development’s “Tennessee” in the background. Ah, beautiful.

    EM,

I’m sure there is an animated gif out there of someone doing the roger rabit - I’ll try to find it. It’s a spastic dance. MC Hammer used to do something pretty close.

    EMC,

I still listen to Arrested Devlopment at least once monthly. Seriously.
