I’ve been meaning to write something with meaning, but these past few days have just been too hectic. Global Voices is taking up a lot more time than I thought it would, but it’s always more than enjoyable. In fact, it’s almost eerie … I set up shop at my usual cafe (HP will be probably be posting photos soon), open my feedreader and sorta travel all around Latin America, checking in on what my people’s in Ecuador are doing then on down to Chile, Argentina, all over the place.
Speaking of flying around the world on your computer, Google just released Google Earth, which used to be called Keyhole. (I took these screenshots using Keyhole). It’s a lot of fun and the basic version is free. Other new cool software is Apple’s iTunes 4.9 which has built-in support for podcasting and pretty much means the end of iPodder. And finally, I’m trying out Konfabulator which is essentially Dashboard for windows. It’s tempting to buy. (if you try it out, make sure to look through all the widgets - for you law freaks, there’s even a “latest supreme court decisions” widget)
Giant congratulations to Derek who has officially negated his liberty. I won’t remind him of our conversation with HP at T.G.I.F.
Besides teaching classes and finding links for Global Voices, the lady and I have been on an intense run of Gin Rummy 500 and Scrabble. Last night I was invincible. Then Dr. Cereal met up with us and we headed over to his “nah, she’s not my girlfriend“’s place before calling it a day.
And that my friends, is a rap.

i recently decided to buy a new laptop and went with an hp compaq. i simply got to much bang for my buck as compared to a new mac .. especially considering they’re going the way of intel soon anyway which will be a major headache … anyway .. i do still like itunes and it’s certainly more convenient having podcasting built in … wonder how long it will take for microsoft to do the same for windows media player?? funny how much nicer the wmp is on windows vs the mac version. it’s actually about as good as itunes. as for the widgets stuff … i’ve just not been able to get into it. i’m a traditionalist and have had my desktop icons in virtually the same design up and down the borders for years. perhaps, though, i’m just getting old an unbending in my ways.
My morning consited of happily upgrading my iTunes and playing with it. Podcasting is the way of the future and definately a new way to communicate (for web geeks like us) with one another. Blogging allows us the opportunity to delve into the minds, the thoughts, ideas, and opinions of others, I think Podcasts will blow that in another dimension. I don’t miss PCs one bit, and I refuse to ever buy one, like, ever. I hate Dell. When I studied for my A + exam, I had to dissect a Dell and I really wanted to spit at it, but well, that would have gotten me fired. Although, I quit my job, so the firing doesn’t really matter, but why am I telling you this? It’s inconsequential, pero ya lo tecle, so ayi esta.
Ah, y Oso, if you y tu girlfriend ever decide to visit Austin or if me and my girl ever decide to get our gringo butts down there we are so grabbing a couple a beers and calling it a scrabble night, eh.
This may happen soon around August/September ‘cos I got a family wedding to go to down there. So, start reading your dictionaries—it’s gonna be fierce.
I suck at Gin Rummy.
I love visiting your blog and seeing where mine ranks in your list of links! Every day a new position. What does it all mean, Alfie?
Seriously, I would hardly rate linkage if I didn’t contribute, and the coin of my realm is the English language, which, ah, I believe you said you are teaching … ? So, we were amused at your use of the possessive apostrophe in “my people’s” (your people’s WHAT?) And, while you may consider your posting as rapping, when you end it, it’s a “wrap”.
Speaking as Grammar Stickler
Myke and EMC,
I definitely wish iTunes had OPML import - it took me a while to copy and paste each individual podcast feed from iPodder. From what I’ve read, a lot of people don’t like that iTunes doesn’t put the podcasts in their own individual playlist, but I’m a huge fan of exactly how it is. Those apple people are smart.
Georganna,
Amazing. You’re the third person to question my grammar today, which I have to admit, has me feeling a bit self-conscious. My people’s is an introduced (by me, of course) direct translation of de mi gente in Spanish. “Gente,” which roughly translates to “people” is a singular object (thus the placement of the apostrophe) whereas “people” is, of course, plural.
I have to constantly remind my students not to say “there was many people,” but rather, “there were many people.
And yes, rap was a pun, though apparently not a clever one. In fact, I was hoping to show off my free-style skilz - via a podcast - with HP and his friend, Omar when they were in town, but we ran out of time.
As far as links go, the order is based on “last updated” in descending order. We try to keep things fresh like lettuce.
Apostrophes are used to indicate contractions or possession. Your explanation of “people’s” makes no sense to me. If you had written “peoples”, indicating a plural (as in more than one group of people), I could understand.
Glad to know you were just punning around with “rap”!
