i know with all the hubub about the pope’s recent passing, everyone has been asking “what does moreno think about all this?” and “what’s moreno’s take on the issue?” well let me tell you.
ok, I’m not a politician. that means I have the right and liberty to say what I think without worrying about losing constituents. that said, let me just say I dont give a fuck about the pope. i don’t care that he died, i don’t care for what he did while he was alive. unless i am mistaken, there is nothing in the bible about assigning a pope. he is an elected official who is treated as a god. he does not differentiate between church and state. to me he is the most dangerous religious fanatic of them all, with more power than any shah or mullah could ever dream of. sure he does not carry out random acts of violence against non-believers, but thats because those days are over for the catholic church. they’ve gained power through murder, rape and torture and now wield their affluence through politics. the catholic church went through its crazy “kill all those who disagree with us” stage that so many muslim fanatics are now stuck in (Pope John Paul II even canonized some of the key figures of the horrific spanish inquisition). the state of the catholic church is what every religious fanatic aspires to achieve. for god’s sake (pun intended), the Vatican City is its own independent entity with its own body of government; it answers to nobody. Would we ever allow this were it a Muslim state? hell no, and for good cause.
I have as much respect for the Pope as I do any other head of state: none. I don’t care that he’s dead because he will just be replaced by another one. For Christ’s sake (no pun intended) Pope John Paul II appointed all but 3 of the 117 cardinals who are going to vote for the next pope. yea that seems about right (sounds like america needs to step in and shove some real democracy down their throats). so you know what to expect from the next pope: more talk about how divorce is wrong, abortion and birth control immoral, no female priests, and continued enforcement of the priest celibacy law that has proven so successful recently. prove me wrong, popey, prove me wrong.
now for those of you so quick to take offense, let me just say that this is no attack on the worshippers, only the worshipped. call me crazy, but i don’t think the pope is a god, because god is not elected. for many, he fulfills the desire of people to have a “god amongst them”, devoting more prayer in his image than in jesus’. even jesus didn’t have his own Jesus-mobile…that guy had to walk in sandals…SANDALS!! he wasnt driven around in a bulletproof bubble. sure he got the occasional donkey-ride every now and then, but he didnt demand it. the pope lives in his castle like a king, looks out his window at his thousands of subjects every day and raises his hand to “bless them”. now thats humility.
for those readers of ours who are Catholics, i’m sorry….not for being offensive, but that you’re Catholic. Zing!! seriously tho, let me say that i feel it my duty as a citizen of the planet to question all authority, and the pope is no exception. especially when he is the religious and political authority of 1 billion people.

You know what I like most about you Moreno, it is your ability to speak truthfully and bluntly on important matters. I value that, I GREATLY value that. I think our culture needs more of this, ALOT more of this. For example, if I had to choose between the least of two evils I would prefer the radical absolutist conservative who makes the false link between Mexicans and criminals than the moral relativist liberal who wants to be my friend simply because of my race and believes that gangs and crime that affect many Mexican neighborhoods is all because of racism.
I value deep conviction and believe that if ones convictions are true, they should be thrown out there on a regular basis for everybody to see. If they withstand the test of time and argument, they most likely have some objective nature to them and so should help influence culture. Speaking truthfully and bluntly helps bring realities of life to the light so we can all move on solving those problems.
With that said, I have always felt that liberals more or less have a natural inclination to dislike religion, especially the Catholic religion. It always irritates me when someone who is otherwise liberal in all other beliefs acts as if they respect religion, or even love religion, specifically the Catholic Church. I mean, that would be like one of my libertarian friends talking about how he really respects and admires Che Guevara. How can you respect and admire something that is a contradiction to everything you hold dear? You can’t, and those who act like they do are fooling themselves.
As you can probably guess, I am Catholic. Granted, I may not be a Church going Catholic, or even a good Catholic, but I am Catholic nonetheless. That is the Tradition my fathers and forefathers were raised in and that is the Tradition my children (if I have any) will be raised in. The easy thing about this is that I happen to agree with the Catholic Church on alot of issues. I agree with her views on abortion, gay marriage, and even agree with her on female priests. So since my starting point is very different than yours, and I would say liberals in general, I can truly respect and admire her from the outside. It is born out of an almost alligned view of the world.
So although I disagree strongly with what you wrote here, and we don’t need to get into specifics on why I disagree, I just want to say that i LOVE your honesty even when we disagree. I just wish more people were as honest as you.

lol. Funny stuff, but spot on with my feelings as well.

a Catholic Hispanic?!? now i’ve seen everything. thanks for your honesty about admiring me, HP. I appreciate that. i understand that you have your views and im not going to try to change them through discussion/argument, as we all know the only means of effective change is through violent uprising. you got your beliefs, i got mine. only mine aren’t rooted in white-washed self-hatred. i kid, i kid. i love HP. he’s the brain behind my inkjet and laserjet printers. seriously tho, i appreciate your tolerance….and i dont know what the fuck cindylu has been smoking.

To address what HP said:
You can find fault with most long term offices of authority, and probably even more with those of questionable democracy. If this was an African blog we would probably be posting about female circumcision, or fucked up witch-doctor cures (like trying to cure HIV by having sex with a virgin). But we are in the western world, and a good number of us have first-hand dealings with the church.
Using
wait a god damned minute. are you telling me that having sex with a virgin DOESNT cure HIV?! i got some phone calls to make. HP don’t send me straight to voicemail you bastid.

If I would have read this on Saturday only a few hours after I had heard the news of the Pope’s death on NPR, I might have gotten my feelings hurt. But… it’s a few days after and I can agree with a few things about what Moreno said. I’ve learned that a lot of people simply don’t care about the Pope’s death. It’s hard for me comprehend since you made it clear he has a lot of influence worldwide, but also because he helped to shape the debate and things that happened in the twentieth century.
All the stuff he wrote? Well, I’ve heard it, read it, seen it. I’ve been a Catholic since day one. My parents met in a church youth group, and as soon as they could get my baptized, they dressed me in a white fancy dress and had my mom’s sister and brother-in-law hold me as a priest in East LA threw water on my head. I remember the Pope’s 1987 visit to LA well and from a young age was fascinated by his life prior and during his papacy.
With all this said, I know it looks as if Catholics worship the Pope. Some might, but I know I don’t. We do, however, hold great reverence for him. Yeah, his conservativism goes against a lot of what liberals in the US and worldwide stand for, but there were definite commonalities.
Finally, Moreno, it IS hard being Catholic, especially when you’re told that pre-marital sex is a mortal sin. I wonder what Alfonso/HP thinks about that… AND the only thing I’ve been smoking is sheesha (hookah). Hmmm… honeydew melon and cherry flavored tobacco.
Using
so you wouldnt have agreed with me had i said the same thing a few days earlier? damn i need to jump on these things sooner.
I’m not going to get into why the Catholic church is my mortal enemy, because i already did. i would like to know how you resolve being a catholic while knowlingly acting in defiance against positions the catholic church is very strong about, i.e. having pre-marital sex. maybe the church knew how unrealistic its ideals were and established the concept of confession to make sure they dont lose the sheep who go astray, they just make them feel really really guilty.
Using
Amen.
I’ve been thinking about writing a post on the pope’s life, but realized this would require work and so I’m waiting for someone else to do it. Maybe HP or Cindylu could make a list of good things the pope did. There’s gotta be a couple (besides speaking pretty damn good Spanish for a Polish guy).
If you think the US media is obsessing over the death of Juanito, you have no idea what I’m going through down here. Monterrey is a guilt-stricken, wafer-eatin’, Guadalupe-lovin’ Iranian revolution of Catholicism.
Just a couple weeks ago I was driving down Lincoln – our neighborhood thoroughfare – where the speed limit is normally 60 kmh and a transit cop pulls me over. He explains that I had just passed a church and that when you pass a church you must slow down to 30 kmh. I explain that I am Buddhist. He does not laugh. But he woulda happily accepted a bribe.
Or even when I say goodbye to someone, I often say “ciao” instead of “adios” (“to god”) and they look deeply hurt. (though recently I read that ciao comes from a command Italian slave owners used to address their slaves so I gotta come up with something new)
I’ve learned I really need to watch myself down here because I’ve been offending a lot of people. I’m probably offending a lot of people right now. But when I found out that Terri Schiavo and the Pope died within just a couple days of each other, I did my special celebration dance, you know the one I’m talking about Moreno. I mean, if there’s any two people in this world who obviously deserved to die it was Terry Schiavo and Juanito. Hell, they deserved to die a couple years ago, so good for them for sticking it out and distracting us from that lil’ disaster in Iraq. Culture of life, yeah that’s great, but I’m telling you, what Terri Schiavo and El Papa were doing was not called living, not by my definition.

Con todo respeto I disagree. At the very least I think we should show the man some respect. Its not like the “Popey” has not been responsible for dropping bombs over you know what.
If you don’t give a rat’s ass about the Catholic church or the pope why do you care whether they are against abortion or female priests or whatever? Como dice me compa Benito “El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz.” It’s almost as though you are a closet case Catholic who wants the church to change in order to accomodate to your belief structure.
Using
My bad: Its not like the “Popey” has been responsible for dropping bombs over you know what.

Your post was hilarious Moreno. I had trouble getting through all of these comments though cause they either didn’t really deal with your points or they weren’t that interesting. It seems like some people created different arguments then the ones you made and then debunked those arguments.
As for the pope and the bible, the Catholic church derives their legitmacy from when Jesus tells Peter he is the rock. From that you have only male priests, churches filled with gold and popes with their large hats and rings they make people kneel to kiss. Kind of goes away from the simplicity and humility of Jesus’ teachings that you were kind enough to bring up Moreno.
P.S. That picture with the hooks is disgusting.
Using
I am a rock. I am an island. And a rock feels no pain, and a Pope never cries.

I’ve been thinking that might have been offensive to say the other comments weren’t interesting, so sorry if feelings were hurt and that ended the discussion.
