El Gato Gordo, San Cristobal, Chiapas

El Gato Gordo ChiapasThose of you whom have traveled in the developing world know that most tourist cities have two kinds of bars. There are the tourists bars where the locals go to meet (and sometimes scam) foreigners and their are the local bars where tourists go to prove to themselves that they are adventurous and multicultural. But they both always have an awkward post-colonial vibe where the unspoken assumption is the tourists are the invaders.

El Gato Gordo in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico is one of the few bars I’ve been to with a truly eclectic mix of travelers (of all classes) and locals. Y es una mezcla totalmente sin broncas.

Though you would never guess it from looking at this mural painted on the wall. Then again, perhaps what brings such a diverse group of people together in San Cristobal - bastion of the Zapatista movement - is our agreement on the flaws of US Foreign Policy.

(I’ll admit, I’m also posting this picture to make sure we’re never included in SignOnSanDiego.com’s blog directory)

Interesting. I see I’m still listed in the San Diego directory of blogs.

When I read their policy, I decided to be upfront about it—I sent the guy a personal note saying, look, I don’t run a porn blog, but I will occasionally link to a porn or erotica site if I think it’s noteworthy. Never because I think it’s hot—I’m just not comfortable doing that kind of thing. Usually because I think it’s funny.

Generally speaking, I have the sense of humor of an 11-year-old.

Also, I swear. A lot. I’m from fucking Long Island, it’s my natural language. I try to control it, but it just fucking comes out of me, like wet, explosive shit after drinking a lot of coffee.

(Well, I didn’t say it that way. I was all polite about it.)

The guy wrote back and said it was okay, he was mainly just trying to keep from linking to porn and hate sites.

This is much more tasteful than the giant brass cockroach in La Cucaracha in San Miguel de Allede,GTO
