Internet language chart

Within 10 years I hope to speak Japanese and Chinese fluently in addition to English and Spanish. I’m super surprised to see neither Hindu nor Urdu in the statistics. (via Brianstorms)

i’m guessing it’s because those who speak hindi and/or urdu and use the internet also speak english fluently and use english for their online activities, thus getting counted in the large english pie piece. mmm pie piece. there are certainly more hindi speakers who use the internet than there are dutch speakers period in the world.

Yeah, I think you’re right. Though I wonder if that’s not going to change. Maybe I’ve just seen too many Monsoon Wedding type movies, but it seems like there’s still a lot of debate on whether Indians should speak English to be more marketable.

True, I think Hindi is got the third largest group of native speakers in the world, but sadly they are too poor to afford internet. I do believe in the future Hindi will become an important language as India becomes more and more developed.
