what im listening to:
juana molina – segundo (2003): i really like this stuff. its nice, quiet, real subtle. i dont know why I hadn’t heard of her before.
pavement – crooked rain, crooked rain (1994): listened to this in high school and just got it again for nostalgia’s sake. not as good as i remember it being, i think Pavement might be a little over-rated. they do have some great songs tho.
serge gainsbourg – bonnie and clyde (1968): this stuff is great. i dont know exactly how much serge has to do with the instrumental tracks, but theyre real good. bridgette bardot is on the album, those two were wacky.
scissor sisters – s/t(2004) : beegees + elton john = scissor sisters. not as bad as that sounds. check out their take on ‘comfortably numb’
ratatat – remixes (2004): these guys are great. great remixes, their self titled is amazing.
icarus line – penance soiree (2004): I thought these guys had a really unique sound, especially considering they’re from l.a., but then I listened to The Stooges – Funhouse. Both albums worth listening to.
son ambulance – euphemystic (2001): it doesn’t get much better than “maria in motion,” the other songs sound a little too much like conor oberst. whether or not thats a bad thing is up to you.
james brown – soul on top (1969): the godfather of soul’s jazz record. definitely not what youre expecting from him, but he pulls it off like he’s a natural.
camera obscura – underachievers please try harder (2004): i downloaded this after reading oso’s recommendation. can’t say i like it too much. they’re unabashed in their ripoffs, from beach boys “surfer girl” (“a sister’s social agony”) to any early leonard cohen song (“your picture”), The Supreme’s “Baby love” (“Let me go home” this one might be intentional since he says “supremes” throughout the song) and anything else is taken from Belle and Sebastian. I must say the girls voice is nice.
eurythmics – greatest hits: i hate greatest hits records, but after downloading their individual albums, i realized the eurythmics weren’t as good as their singles. You really can’t beat “who’s that girl?” Am i right freddie?
miles davis – on the corner(1972):
“is this the Jackie Brown soundtrack?” – freddie
joy division – unknown pleasures (1979): not sure what to make of this album. at least i was able to get all the way through it unlike Substance. productions kind of sloppy, but i think thats part of the appeal.
duke ellington – three suites (1960): can’t beat the duke or his swinging takes on classical standards, especially his “sugar plum cherry”.
i’m the greatest critic ever
