No Mas IE

Browser StatsI have a goal. By the end of 2004 I want 95% of my readers to use a browser other than Internet Explorer. So a new feature of the blog is that every Wednesday I will post my weekly browser stats and we’ll see how the progress goes. Red is Internet Explorer. Click on the graph to see it larger.

From what I’ve read, Safari’s far from perfect, but is a much much better browser than Internet Explorer. I’m so jealous - I’ve got a G3 desktop in the house, but I can’t wait to get my powerbook.

A lot of Safari’s issues have been cleaned up since the public beta was released 18 months ago–it mostly chokes on secure sites using old protocols, bad HTML/CSS, and code that makes use of IE-only quirks (excuse me, features). If you get past these problems, the built-in popup blocker and spellchecker are lifesavers, and the ability to switch mid-program into different languages (i.e., when visiting Woojay, I can start a comment in English, interject something in Korean, and finish off in German with a single mouse click) has made my life much, much easier.

I use Firefox on my PC, but until I can get a built-in spellchecker, Safari remains my browser of choice.

That’s good to know. One reason I want to wait to get my Powerbook is so that it comes equipped with the new operating system and Safari’s new integrated RSS reader.

With that said though, I’m a big supporter of open source and am very very happy with Mozilla.

Well, Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) is due out early 2005, probably in January–or so the rumors say. Maybe as a late Xmas present to yourself?

And, if it makes you feel better–Safari actually has its roots in open source. It’s core rendering engine is a Mac-tailored evolution of KDE’s Konqueror. Kinda a microcosm of OS X’s embrace of Free BSD Unix.

I use Camino on my powerbook and Firefox on my PC, which I hardly use since getting the powerbook. I’m proud to say I’ve converted at least a few dozen people away from the Evil Empire’s browser. I’ll probably switch back to Safari when the new version with RSS is released.
