Hari’s comment about the Louvre got me thinking a little bit about museums, about what they display, about what we conisider valuable for public knowledge. I like to disagree with Hari as much as I can, but in this case, he seems pretty close to right. Why do we go on continuing to worship royalty, fame, and wealth. Museums are supposed to be in the interest of educating the masses, but if there ever is an exhibit about poverty or boring every day life, it is always through the lens of some well paid bourgeois artist or at least curated by a well paid bourgeois critic commenting on some artist who has already died.
I want to see a giant, well funded, well organized, well commented monument to normalcy. I want to see the Louvre cleared out - every item of European aristicrocy and papal heritage removed - to make way for an exhibit of what you can see at FOUND Magazine.
This book of love poems would be included. I found it after whilest taking out the trash at Miracles last week. Usually I wouldn’t have noticed it, but for some reason I was looking into the trash bag trying to figure out why it was so heavy. And here was this book amongst all the muffin wrappers and paper coffee cups. So weird to see a book in perfect shape in a trash can. Something blasphemous about it. I opened the inside cover and read this inscription: “To a man whose passion seems boundless … Love AMO.”
A man whose passion seems boundless … Love AMO. I have to meet this couple. I have to figure out what went wrong. If it was doomed from the beginning or if it should have never ended.
Here, let me thumb through and find a poem to copy down. Here, I like this one - E.E. Cummings, one of my favorites:
“i like my body when it is with your”
i like my body when it is with your
body. It is so quite new a thing.
Muscles better and nerves more.
i like your body. i like what it does,
i like its hows. i like to feel the spine
of your body and its bones, and the trembling
-firm-smooth ness and which i will
again and again and again
kiss, i like kissing this and that of you,
i like, slowly stroking the, shocking fuzz
of your electric fur, and what-is-it comes
over parting flesh … And eyes big love-crumbs,and possibly i like the thrill
of under me you so quite new
Too bad for AMO and her man that the thrill did not last.
For those who are interested, FOUND Magazine actually will be making its rounds from city to city to show off some of their best pieces. You can find a list of cities and dates at their website. They will be at Whistlestop Bar in San Diego on May 19th at 9 p.m.
